The old port of La Rochelle (just 1 hr 30 mins) with its many seafood restaurant and vast aquarium and marina should not be missed.  stroll along the old harbour and take in the many sights.
Ile de Ré (1 hr 30 mins) offering 30 kms of sandy beaches is highly recommended.
The medieval village and Chateau of Puy du Fou ( www.puydufou.com ) is a must for families.  Children will marvel at the jousting skills of the knights, the amazing day time shows and activities and the performance at night fall.  Just 30 minutes drive from the house.
Futuroscope ( www.futuroscope.com ) is a great day out for the whole family.  This European theme park based upon multimedia cinemographic and audio visual techniques of the future offers breathtaking shows, interactive adventures and 3D cinemas.  Just over 1 hour drive.
Sporting Activites
Fishing:  whether a seasoned fisherman or a complete beginner, a visit to the 100 hectare park of Pescalis is worth a trip (see www.pescalis.com).  The lakes are stocked with the most sought after fish and equipment is available to hire.
Golf: There are three great golf courses within an hours drive; 27 holes at Les Forges set in a stunning nature reserve, 18 holes at the 17th Century Chateau du Petit Chene and 18 holes at Golf de Niort.
